Two-hundred thirty-two years ago today American Patriots illustrated to the British Crown what they thought of being governed by laws that were not enacted by their own elected representatives. The Boston Tea Party was no act of anarchy, but a statement of principle. Free Men have the God-given right to be governed by officials whom they elect.
In the time since December 16, 1773 the appetite for Self-government seems to have waned somewhat in America, but the impulse to impose alien laws on the American People still burns bright among Liberal elites. Consider Supreme Court Justices Breyer, Kennedy and O’Connor citing foreign laws to invalidate the democratic acts of the Texas State Legislature and Executive. Consider Democrat stars Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, etc… insisting that the United States abide by a Treaty that was rejected by our Constitutional institutions (i.e. the Senate voted 95-0 to reject the Kyoto Accords). Consider the insistence of American Leftists that the United States Congress should abdicate to the United Nations its sovereign authority to make war.
Americans today would do well to imbibe the spirit of liberty that motivated our forefathers to fill Boston Harbor with English tea two-plus centuries ago. Our heritage of freedom and self-government was dearly bought by the generation that fought The War for Independence, and has been maintained at a great cost of blood and treasure by succeeding generations of Americans. If we would honor the deeds of the Patriots of the Boston Tea Party we should never be docile when hard won freedoms are threatened by those who would impose alien rule on the People of this nation, whether Kings, Politicians or Courts.
