Media accounts are breathless with suspicions that Vice President Cheney delayed reporting his hunting accident for 24 hours because he was planning to cover up the incident. (Leaving aside the question of why all big media outlets delayed reporting the Swift Boat Vets accusations against Presidential Candidate John Kerry for two weeks) The truth is that Cheney stonewalled the public as long as he could, while he desperately attempted to contact Ted Kennedy’s lawyer. Unfortunately for the V.P., press reports of the mishap emerged before Cheney could reach the Massachuttsets attorney, who is considered the pre-eminent authority on how and when to report an accident.
