John McCain was not my first (second, third or fourth) choice for President, but for the past two months I've been thinking of reasons to love him. That's not too difficult -- the challenge is to not think of reasons to detest him, but Barack Obama has been helping me with that.
I'm a pro-Life, pro-War, NR Conservative, who was prepared to hold my nose and punch McCain's name to vote against Obama, but four things have been bringing me around to voting for McCain. 1) my eldest son is on his way to Afghanistan with the U.S. Army, so I have a personal stake in electing a CIC committed to American victory 2) McCain's ads ridiculing Obama's pretensions show that our guy is willing and able to hit Obama in his soft spot, unlike Bob Dole in '96, who agreed not to make character an issue when running against Bill Clinton, 3) McCain's Saddleback Forum answers indicated (generally) a good grasp and embrace of Conservatism, and 4) the selection of a pro-Life, pro-Drilling, limited government Conservative as his running mate, shows that McCain is at least willing to take a breather from vexing Conservatives.
With the selection of Sarah Palin, McCain has officially closed the deal with me. I just went to his website and made a donation.
