An election that really matters

While I've long held passionate political convictions, this election is the first Presidential choice since 1984 in which I am genuinely concerned for the survival of our way of life. It's no secret that on domestic policy, I think George W. Bush is mostly right, and John Kerry is completely wrong; but domestic policy, important as it is, does not hold the potential for the near-term destruction of our way of life. Why? Because our democratic processes can correct most of what goes wrong, even if that takes a long time.

The issue at stake in this election, however, is not something America can afford to get wrong, then fix up later. America today is faced with mortal enemies, bent on visiting destruction on our way of life, and our very lives. These Jihadists are driven by a bloodthirsty ideology, and command the allegiance of thousands of killers, willing to sacrifice their own lives to the cause. This is not an enemy who can be reasoned or negotiated with, nor one who will voluntarily give up the fight. Our enemy is resourceful, technologically sophisticated, and has enjoyed the safe haven and support of nation-states who would like bad things to happen to America, but wouldn't dare engage the United States directly. Having the support of nation-states has allowed these outlaws a safe base of operations to plot, train, cache weapons, and launch acts of terrorism against America.

Prior to September 11, 2004, American policy toward these enemies was generally to treat each act of terrorism as a distinct incident, and pursue the perpetrators thereof for arrest, trial, conviction and imprisonment. This not only persuaded our enemies that America would not fight back, but it allowed al Qaeda to grow strong and prepare for the attacks that shocked the World. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, President Bush clearly outlined the nature of the threat, and a new strategy for confronting it.

As he explained in his January 2002 State of the Union message (by which time the U.S. had already toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan and put al Qaeda on the run), the danger to America comes from an Axis of Evil, comprised of terrorist groups with global reach, and nation states who support them and are developing weapons of mass destruction. President Bush included in that axis al Qaeda, Iraq, Iran and North Korea.

The President argued that if a terrorist group, like al Qaeda were to obtain chemical, biological or nuclear weapons they would not hesitate to use them against the United States, or against our interests in the World. In light of this threat, the U.S. must use whatever resources we have to actively prevent WMD from reaching the hands of terrorist groups. The President was crystal clear in telling us that different circumstances would call for different tactics, but all the threats would have to be addressed, if Americans are to live in safety.

After an agonizingly long thirteen months of trying to persuade the United Nations Security Council to enforce its own multiple Resolutions demanding that Saddam Hussein account for and give up his WMD and WMD Programs -- weapons and weapons programs that the U.N. and every national intelligence service in the World believed Saddam had -- President Bush acted to protect America, even though the French, Germans and Russians didn't like it.

I would say, "and you know the rest of the story," but if you've been getting your information from the network news and the major wire services, you don't know the rest of the story at all. You only know the bad news. Operation Iraqi Freedom has been costly, but it has been a costly success, so far. Besides the liberation of 25 million human beings from the most unspeakable brutality and tyranny, America is establishing a second self-governing democracy (along with Afghanistan) in the heart of the Middle East, where until recently we had an enemy destabilizing the region. When our news media reports only the costs, and not the successes, it's no wonder people start to view the mission as a disaster.

While sometimes unable to vie with the continuous disinformation served up by CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, AP, the NY Times, etc..., President Bush has been absolutely stalwart in his determination to see the War against Jihadist Terrorism to victory. This in the face of very loud and very virulent opposition, both at home and abroad.

Bush has proven himself to be a leader who will press on to victory, no matter what. Is John Kerry the kind of man who will make the hard choices, and put America's interests first, even when doing so brings the catcalls of Europe's elites? This much everybody knows by now, John Kerry has a Plan to win the War on Terrorism. What nobody can tell you is what that plan is! Even Kerry's staunchest supporters cannot say whether Kerry would withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq or put more troops in.

And that is merely one illustration of Kerry's fence-straddling. A man who either doesn't know his own mind, or conceals it for political motives is not the man to lead America in a time of war. Kerry wants us to believe it would be safe to return to the strategy of behaving as if we are not at war, while our Jihadist enemies are still at war with us. We tried that strategy during the 1990's and the end-result was that we were all minding our own business one beautiful September morning three years ago, when we were hit with the biggest sucker punch in our nation's history.

Contrary to John Kerry's assertion, America cannot return to a time when terrorism was just a nuisance, because no such time ever really existed in the first place, even though previous administrations responded to terrorist attacks as if they were a mere nuisance. Moreover, we live in an age when technology has raised the stakes of a defensive posture toward terrorism to an unbearable level.

The possibility of a terrorist attack against American cities involving WMD's demands that the United States take an offensive strategy to defeating terrorism. George W. Bush has pursued just such an offensive strategy, denying al Qaeda safe-haven in Afghanistan, putting Saddam Hussein out of business in Iraq, turning Pakistan from an al Qaeda supporter into an ally in the War on Terrorism, curtailing the Saudi's official support of radical Islamism and busting up both the Pakistani nuclear technology black market and Libya's nuclear weapons program. All this in addition to the capture or killing, by U.S. forces and our allies, of 75% of al Qaeda's senior leadership.

John Kerry is offering America self-doubt, retreat, global tests, and burying our head in the sand, in hopes that the bad guys will see that we mean them no harm and leave us alone. In short Kerry is offering us defeat in the War on Terrorism. George W. Bush is offering a hard fight, a relentless fight, and perserverance unto victory.

America must win the worldwide War on Terrorism, not merely capture Osama Bin Laden, as Kerry seems to think. If our children are going to grow up in an America that really is safe, then the United States has some heavy lifting to do today, and it won't necessarily be popular in the effete salons of Europe, or in the U.N. Security Council. That is why it really matters that George W. Bush be re-elected tommorrow.
