Once the concession and victory speeches were done, and the re-election of George W. Bush was a certainty, I tried to articulate my feelings, and a passage from The Return of the King came to mind.
Frodo and Sam have destroyed the Ring, and Sam awakens on the celebratory Field of Cormallen, surprised to find Gandalf alive and well, Frodo alive and well, and (most astonishingly) himself alive and well. Gandalf inquires as to how Sam feels, and Samwise perfectly captures my post-Bush victory sentiments: "How do I feel?" he cried, "Well, I don't know how to say it. I feel, I feel" -- he waved his arms in the air - "I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!"
