Global War on Terrorism or Global Warming
Bill Clinton, in Davos, listed the most important issues facing the world as Global Warming, Inequality and Cultural Divides.
There you have it, the 2008 Election framework in a nutshell:
Vote Democrat if you want to be protected from Global Warming, Inequality and Cultural Divides, Vote Republican if you want to be protected from Islamist Terrorism and Axis of Evil Nuclear Weapons.
Never forget that Clinton’s first election in 1992 was made possible by the perception that, with the fall of the Soviet Union, the world was now safe and American could relax its vigilence and afford a feel-good domestic nanny-state dove in the White House.
When is the last time a Liberal won election to the Presidency in a time of perceived mortal danger to the USA? The answer is either never or only once (the latter, if you reject the idea that the aftermath of the nine-year Vietnam War was a time when a disillusioned American Public temporarily pooh-poohed the urgency of the Cold War).
Clinton still recognizes the importance of shifting the focus from national survival to anything else if he hopes to ever again bed-down at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
